“Evaluate Career Opportunities by Whether They Broaden Your Horizons” - Prof Caron Beaton-Wells

What happens when you interview your previous boss about her career story?

A very real and honest conversation about life and career choices, as it turns out. And great advice on why external markers of success are to be avoided.

Professor Caron Beaton-Wells is Dean and CEO of The Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG). She is an absolute powerhouse leader.

Caron’s interview was full of incredible insights derived from her career as a lawyer, and academic, and a leader. We learned why attaining the white picket fence is less important than making a broad impact on society.

In this video, Caron shares her approach for evaluating career opportunities:

  • Will I grow from this?

  • Will it expand my horizons?

  • What new experiences will it give me?

  • Who will I meet who might be outside my usual circle?

We at EVEN loved Caron’s advice, and we know how much both Ellen and myself have benefited from Caron’s courage, her guidance, and her sponsorship in the 4 years we worked with her. We all need someone like Caron in our corner.
